The Council of Academic Deans of Research Education Institutions (CADREI) includes deans of research-active schools and colleges of education and related academic disciplines from across the United States. The faculty and students in our colleges study and engage in research and service in both early childhood through 12th grade education and higher (post-secondary) education.
We are deeply concerned about the impact of current immigration practices that separate and/or keep children separated from their parents, because we understand the potentially life-long negative effects of trauma on children.
We are concerned, too, about the status of older adolescents and young adults who are identified as Dreamers: those included under the Deferred Action Childhood Arrivals policy initiated in 2012 and whose immigration status is currently in question.
As a body of educators and researchers committed to the quality of human lives, we are eager to serve as a resource for state and federal organizations and legislators in order to support immediate action that reunites children with their families, to addresses their emotional, psychosocial, and physical needs, and to develop compassionate immigration practices and policies that reflect the dignity and respect for individuals that historically have characterized the United States of America across the globe.
